Investing in Roads and Infrastructure

With 612 miles of county roads, maintaining and improving transportation infrastructure remains a top priority in Barren County. Under Byrd’s leadership, significant investments have been made to address road repairs, including:

  • Low Water Crossings: Several flood-prone areas have been improved, including a new bridge at Ritters Mill. While some initial design challenges arose, county officials are actively working with engineers to enhance the structure’s durability.

  • Paving and Pothole Repair: Over the past two years, 21 miles of road have been paved, marking a record amount of roadwork in the county’s history.

  • Equipment Upgrades: The county has invested in a total patcher, allowing for year-round pothole repairs, along with new tools for tree removal and roadside maintenance.

Barren County also secured $791,751 in bridge repair funding, the second-highest amount awarded in the state. Additionally, efforts continue to push for increased state funding to further improve county roads.

Parks and Recreation: Expanding Opportunities for Families

The Barren County Parks and Recreation Department has experienced significant growth and improvements, ensuring that families and young athletes have access to high-quality facilities and programming. Key initiatives include:

  • Facility Expansion: A partnership with the city has allowed for increased access to fields, including those at Beaver Trail Park, accommodating over 800 children in county leagues.

  • Jackie Browning Park Upgrades: A $2 million investment has funded six new fields, expanded parking, additional restrooms, shaded seating, and a new digital scoreboard to enhance the experience for players and spectators.

  • New Playground Addition: Through a 50% grant, a new playground is being installed, allowing younger siblings to stay entertained while attending games.

  • Staffing and Program Growth: Additional staff members have been hired to improve park management, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for visitors.

grand opening for the newly improved Jackie Browning Park is planned for the spring, and past community leaders will be invited to celebrate the park’s transformation.

Community Development: Strengthening County Services

A major milestone in Barren County’s progress has been the acquisition and renovation of the Barren County Development Center (formerly the U.S. Bank building). This 38,000-square-foot facility is now a hub for county operations, offering:

  • A Centralized Business & Permitting Office: Contractors can now complete all necessary paperwork in one location, streamlining the process for new developments in the county.

  • Improved Health Department Facilities: The new space provides expanded capacity for public health services, with the county planning to sell the old health department building to reinvest in other initiatives.

  • A High-Tech Community Conference Room: This new meeting space, featuring modern technology and professional amenities, will be available for business and community use.

  • Enhanced Veteran Services: Additional offices have been created, allowing for expanded staffing and improved support for Barren County’s veterans.

Looking Ahead

With ongoing infrastructure investments, recreational improvements, and community-driven projects, Barren County is positioned for continued growth. Future County Talk episodes will highlight the Big Four Projects that will further enhance the county’s future.
